DESCRIBED FRUIT FLY SPECIES
 IN SOLOMON ISLANDS

This table lists described fruit fly species recorded in the Solomon Islands, based on surveyed carried out since 1994.  These distribution records shown on the table have been published in Drew and Romig (2001)1.  They have recorded 48 species, including nine new species described in the paper. Note that B. honiarae Drew has become a junior synonym of B. confluens (drew), and B. varipes (Malloch) has become a junior synonym of B. quadrisetosa (Bezzi).  Names of new species described in the article are highlighted on table.  The distribution compilation per province is by no means definitive and should not be used as a basis for decisions on restriction of produce movements.

Four specimens that look closely similar to B. musae (Tryon) were collected by methyl eugenol traps on Guadalcanal in 1995.  Host fruit surveying of bananas have never yielded B. musae in Solomon Islands. It is therefore likely that the species one of the non-economic species, in the musae complex, that don't infest bananas.
