WALLIS
AND FUTUNA
This French Territory
is composed of two groups of islands separated by a 200 km distance: Wallis (159
km²,
145m) and Futuna-Alofi (115 km², 524m). Trapping was done for the first time
in 1995 on both islands to determine seasonal abundance of fruit
flies.
FRUIT FLY SPECIES:
Bactrocera
passiflorae, B. kirki,
Pacific fruit fly (B. xanthodes)
and the non-economic B. obscura (Malloch) occur on both Wallis and Futuna, while
B. distincta is restricted to
Futuna.
STATUS OF
QUARANTINE SURVEILLANCE (as of October 2007): There
are 6 trapping sites on Wallis and 2 sites on Futuna, each with one Cue-lure and one methyl
eugenol trap. There are also 2 female fruit fly traps placed in Wallis -
one(1) at the
wharf and one(1) at the airport. Fruits sampled for research and quarantine
surveillance are breadfruit, mango and papaya. There is also a
quarantine awareness program on the radio.
