When travelling to Mexico, especially Cancun, an obvious question to ask is “is it safe to travel to Cancun?” The question that you should be asking is how can you save money when in Cancun? Here are some tips when out and about to make sure more money remains in your pocket, instead of the pocket of individuals. This isn’t about thieves but with merchants and taxi drivers too.
Negotiate on a Price First
Before accepting a taxi journey or buying a product from a market stall, bargain and negotiate. They will be willing to do this and usually charge much higher than they should because of unwitting tourists. It is possible to get a taxi cheaper in downtown Cancun than around the hotels because of the difference between tourists and the locals.
Hail Your Taxis from the Street
Avoid getting a taxi that is outside the hotel. These cost much more than if you go out to the street and get one from there. They are also more open to more negotiation than those waiting outside the hotels. If you find that a taxi driver is unwilling to negotiate, wait for another one; there will be plenty around to choose between.
Count Your Change
Taxi drivers and merchants are known for short changing people because people rarely check. Before you get out of the cab or leave the stall, check the amount of money that you have been given. Do the math in your head and if you have been short changed, speak up. This is their way of getting a little more than you bargained for.
Take the Bus
There are regular bus services around that are easy to follow and use. However, you will need to pay in coins so make sure you have plenty of it. If you are unsure of the costs, talk to the hotel receptionist. When you get to your stop, press the button. The bus drivers will not stop at each place unless they know someone wants to get off and are not likely to remember your stop.
Saving money is possible around Cancun but you need to ask the right questions. Is it safe to travel to Cancun will only get you so far. You need to think how to bargain and negotiate to make your trip worthwhile. This can take more time but it is worth it when you have more money when you return home.
